There are hundreds of benefits to traveling solo: paying more for accommodation, eating alone, having to suffer soley through the gaps in language and communication. But my most favorite is of course, taking the ubiquitios picture of myself in some town along the way. Solo Travel is a great way to get lost (literally) in a place with out a trusty sidekick to remind you how foreign you are. I am always envious of those people who travel in pairs but then I think about all the stupid things I have done while being alone and the places/things I saw as a result of my solo travel experiments. I can’t diss traveling alone too much because I could wait for friends and family to muster the courage to take more than 1 weeks vacation. Yes, I COULD wait, but that is the equivalent of waiting for the next Halley’s comet and I will be in my 80’s when that happens and who wants to travel when their hips hurts and everything is so darn loud?
Here is my Latvia/Lithuania travel photo essay of the modern single traveler. I also have similar exploits from Turkey, Qatar, and Phuket.

I am so envious of people who can take good photos of themselves using the arm stretch method. I always wind up looking like a parody of myself, something from a funhouse mirror. Maybe my arms aren’t long enough? LOL. These are great shots, and great mementos. Very cool.

Thanks Jeff, I am back in the US for a couple weeks before heading back to Turkey for the winter. I hear Alaska is simply amazing!
